Mikrotīkls Ltd. , known internationally as MikroTik , is a Latvian manufacturer of computer networking equipment . It sells wireless products and routers. The company was founded in 1995, with the intention to sell in the emerging wireless technology. As of 2007, the company had more than 70 employees. The company's products are known for their low-cost alternatives to expensive router and Ethernet radio relay lines .
The main product of MikroTik is known a Linux-based operating system such as MikroTik RouterOS . Installed on the company's own hardware (router board ) or on standard x86-based computer , the computer is in a network router and implemented various additional functions such as firewall, virtual private network (VPN) service and client , bandwidth shaping and quality of service, wireless access point functions and other functions commonly used in the interconnection networks . The system is also capable of serving as a prisoner -portal- based hotspot. The operating system is in increasing service levels, the licensed each releasing more of the available RouterOS features . A MS Windows application called Winbox provides a graphical user interface for configuring and monitoring RouterOS RouterOS but also allows access via FTP , Telnet, and Secure Shell ( SSH) . An application programming interface is designed for direct access by applications for management and monitoring.
RouterOS supports many applications that are used by Internet service providers , such as OSPF , BGP , multiprotocol label switching ( VPLS / MPLS) , OpenFlow . The product is supported by Mikrotik through a forum and a wiki , and offers various theme and examples of configurations. RouterOS supports Internet Protocol version 4 ( IPv4) and Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6).
The software provides support for virtually all network interfaces that support the Linux kernel 2.6.16 , except wireless, where the Atheros and Prism chipsets are the only supported hardware, such as the 3.x version .
The company produces a series of integrated circuits under the name RouterBOARD markets and related components that implement a complete hardware platform for RouterOS operating system .
The RouterBOARD line , combined with RouterOS is marketed at small to medium sized wireless Internet service provider , typically providing broadband wireless access in remote areas. Products include pre- SOHO routers, wireless 802.11n and MIMO TDMA equipment for indoor and outdoor use , as well as bare PCB router for integration in customer specific solutions.
In November 2012 published the MikroTik Cloud Core router integrated unit based on the Tilera CPU supports 16-36 CPU cores , 12 x 1000Base- T Ethernet and 4 SFP (mini -GBIC) ports, and "Fast - path " packet forwarding between interfaces ( with claim 24 million packets per second forwarding rate). This unit is aimed at the average network operators and try to be an inexpensive alternative to other more well-known brands.
In 2004 a project was begun to build low-cost Internet infrastructure in rural Mali. MikroTik routers and operating systems were due to their low cost , flexibility, the fact that the system is already selected " a significant customer base in Mali " and had a user interface as " better than other products ." [3 ] MikroTik routers were also preferred for a WLAN project in Burkina Faso, [ 4] and MikroTik proprietary protocol Nstreme better than IEEE 802.11 under the project conditions . [ 5 ]
In 2008, the community Piripiri , Piauí State , Brazil decided to use MikroTik Router exclusively to build the infrastructure for the provision of free Internet access . [6 ] MikroTik routers are also popular in the Czech Republic and Hungary, where they enjoy a good reputation [ 7].
Under OLPC program, Uruguay used a nationwide cellular network in the schools. Probably the largest Mikrotik application in a country with a population of 3 million . [Edit ] Around 200,000 students received a small laptop that connected Mikrotik access points.
